Miriam Newman, 92, died peacefully at home on Sept. 24, 2014. A memorial service to celebrate Miriam's life will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at First Presbyterian Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Sam Massey officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice, First Presbyterian Church or Mercy Hospital Foundation.
Miriam was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, where she met and married Jack Newman on April 24, 1943. They resided in Cincinnati, Oakridge, Tenn., back to Cincinnati, Baltimore, Md., Westfield, N.J., Omaha, Neb., and Iowa City.
In Westfield, Miriam was president of the Junior Women's Club and organized Broadway revues and led Girl Scout and Cub Scout troops. In Omaha, she was a volunteer at church and manager of the Joslyn Art Museum Gift Shop. In Iowa City, she started and managed the Mercy Hospital Gift Shop, with over 1,000 hours of volunteer work.
Miriam loved bridge with friends as well as competitively where she was a Life Master. She was a member or First Presbyterian Church, Kappa Kappa Gamma and past president of PEO Chapter KQ.
Miriam is survived by her loving husband of 71 years; and their two children, Don Newman (Mary) of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Jean Warner (Gary Trout) of Iowa City; five grandchildren, Jennifer Kelly (Craig), Andrew Newman, Nicki Newman (Dan Gunderson), Christopher Warner and Katherine Krieg (Christian); and eight great- grandchildren, Grace Kelly, Hannah Kelly, Rachael Kelly, Emily Newman, Anna Gunderson, Milo Gunderson, Sam Krieg and Henry Krieg.
Miriam was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, whom she loved dearly.
