Swanson, Karl Burland
Karl Burland Swanson, 93, of Traer, formerly of Newhall, died peacefully Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at his granddaughter's home in Traer, where he had been residing the past four years. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with the Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton, and one hour before services Friday at the church. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Newhall.
Karl was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Creston, Iowa, the son of August and Esther Larson Swanson. He graduated from Creston High School. Karl was united in marriage with Evelyn Werning in Creston. The couple farmed near Newhall. Karl retired in 1983.
He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. Karl enjoyed spending time with his family.
Karl is survived by one son, Burland (Lorena) Swanson of Vinton; one sister, Carolyn Marie Stevens of Loveland, Colo.; one granddaughter, Susan (Scott) Dunkel of Traer; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; one brother, Walton Swanson; and two sisters, Eleanor Anderson and Esther Lorraine Gaskill.
