Robert "Hank" Klein, 83, died peacefully Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at the home of his sister.
Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 29, from noon to 3 p.m. at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, Iowa City. Graveside committal will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Friends are welcome to join the family at 5 p.m. at the Eagle Lodge to celebrate Hank's life.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice or Mercy Hospital Foundation for the Mercy Hospice Unit.
Hank was born Aug. 5, 1931, in Hills, Iowa, the son of Irene and Wilfred Kral Klein. Hank lived his whole life in the Hills area where he had owned Hank's Tap. He had been employed at the University of Iowa Physical Plant and had managed the VFW and Eagles 695. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Hank loved to bowl, play cards, hunt and fish and was an avid Hawkeye football fan. He was a member of County Johnson Irish. Hank played softball in the World Softball Championship in 1966. In 1995 he was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame. Most important to Hank was socializing with family and friends.
The family extends their appreciation to the caring staff of Iowa City Hospice and the Mercy Hospice Unit.
Hank is survived by his sister, Betty Hanson, who lovingly cared for him in his final days and whom Hank kindly put through nursing school; his brother, Rich Klein (Kay Wheeler): nieces and nephews, Denise (Bill) Maier, Scott (Lisa) Hanson, Kevin ( Marianne) Hanson, Kelly Mills, Jill (Brent) Simpson, Jody (Mike) Thomas, Chuck Klein (Tom Swank), Roxann Droll, Carla Droll, Tim (Ann) Klein, Jeff (Shelly) Klein, Rich (Kim) Klein, Kris (Doug) Tauchen and Stacy (Mike) Miller; great-nieces and nephews; and great-great nephews and niece, Chason, Easton and Gentry Maier.
Hank was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Jim (Betty) Klein, Bill Hanson and Bev Klein; great-nephew, Austin Maier; great-great-nephew Corbin Maier; and many dear friends.
