Johnson, Noel Ann
My mom, Noel Ann Johnson, passed away peacefully Jan. 25, 2013.
She was born in Chicago in 1935 and moved to Lisbon, Iowa in 1948. She was an Iowa City resident for 46 years. Before retiring, she worked for the Staff Benefits Department of the University of Iowa.
My mom had a great sense of adventure. She was an early Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi in 1963-1964. She and I took trips together to Texas, Florida, Georgia and California. She was always up for anything.
My mom enjoyed bird watching and gardening. She was a lifelong Democrat. Despite failing health, she made sure she voted in the last election. My mom believed in charity and volunteerism, and practiced both. She was a wonderful cook and baker. Growing up, there was always a delicious homemade treat on our kitchen counter. My mom loved animals and they loved her back.
Noel's family includes her children; Kathleen Castro and Ralph Johnson; siblings, Ralph Zahorik, John Zahorik, Eileen Dighton, Frank Zahorik, Robert Zahorik, Karin Zahorik and David Zahorik; her close friends, Kathy Fitzpatrick and Myrene Hoover; and a very special dear friend, Jim York.
In accordance with Noel's wishes, she has gifted her body to the University of Iowa and no public services are planned.
Donations may be made in her name to Iowa City Hospice or Friends of the Animal Center Foundation in Iowa City.
