Bengt Eric Ferdinand Johnson, 93, of Manchester, died Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016. Visitation will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at Bohnenkamp - Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Manchester. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Manchester, with visitation one half hour before the service. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Manchester.
Bengt is survived by one brother, Robert (Lois) Johnson; and sister-in-law, Bessie Maurer; along with many nieces and nephews.
Bengt was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marietta; and his sister, Alice Bogue.
Bengt was born Feb. 18, 1922, in Linkoping, Sweden, the son of Arvid and Ebba (Asvard) Johnson. He came to the United States with his parents in November 1924. He was baptized at home and confirmed Oct. 10, 1937 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Delaware, Iowa. Ben attended Delaware County rural schools and graduated from Winthrop High School in 1939.
On Aug. 18, 1946, Bengt was united in marriage to Marietta Maurer at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Delaware. They farmed all their lives, retiring in 1985, from their farm north of Manchester. He was a salesman with the Pioneer HI-BRED Seed Company for 13 years. He was past president of the Farm Bureau and the Delaware County Extension Council and was past secretary of the Swine Producers. Bengt was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church and served in various offices of the church. Bengt and Marietta moved to the Meadows Assisted Living facility on March 15, 2008.
