Jul. 12, 2011 8:46 am
Gov. Terry Branstad issued an emergency disaster proclamation Tuesday for Benton County in response to Monday morning's severe weather.
Earlier, Branstad had signed a similar declaration for Tama County.
In the early morning hours of July 11, severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes passed through Iowa, causing downed limbs, trees and power lines.
Benton and Tama County officials have requested state assistance in recovery efforts and restoring power outages caused by this storm system.
The governor's proclamation allows state resources to be utilized to respond to and recover from the effects of these storms.
Vinton residents Richard Rilling and his father-in-law Rick Wensel work on clearing a large tree from F Ave in Vinton following an early morning storm on Monday, July 11, 2011. Richard's wife Amy and friend Ben Tarbin joined them in helping the clean up efforts by using chainsaws to cut up and remove trees from F Avenue. (Cliff Jette/The Gazette)
