Lehman, Laurena Margaret
Laurena Margaret Lehman, 86, of Iowa City, passed away Tuesday, August 2, 2011, in the Oaknoll Health Center. She was born in Morse, Iowa, on March 30, 1925, to John and Mary (Leonard) Wall.
Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. Father John Spiegel will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4: to 8 p.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City, where a parish vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Iowa City.
Laurena graduated from Mount Mercy College and taught elementary school in Blairstown, Iowa, for two years. She married George Edward Lehman on Sept. 9, 1947, in Morse, Iowa. They had nine children. George and Laurena farmed southeast of Iowa City, until their retirement when they moved to Iowa City. George passed away in March 2002. Laurena moved to Oaknoll Retirement Community in September 2009.
Laurena was known for her generosity to her family, relatives and friends along with her subtle sense of humor. She was proud of her Irish heritage and her Catholic faith.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St Mary's Altar and rosary Society, Mercy Hospital Guild Volunteers, Regina Booster's Century Club, Chatham Oaks Care Review Board the Red Foxes Chapter of the Red Hat Society and the Scott Township Sew and Blow Club.
Laurena is survived by her nine children, Marcia Greiner (friend Charlie), Mike (Danette), Tim (Deb), Jerry (Debbie), Kevin (friend Christine), Barry (Tracey), Joe (friend Jenni), Chris (Angie) of Iowa City, and Marty (Laurie) of McKinley, Texas.
She enjoyed following her 27 grandchildren in their activities, hobbies, academics and athletics: Tyson (Amanda), Trisha (Jason), Thad (Bobbi), Tory (Kalie), Andrea (Scott), Riley, Robbie, Laurie, Casey (Renee), Kyle (Christa), Austin, Grant, Calvin, Cole, Landis, Abbie, Connor, Blake, Jacob, Jordyn, Braden, Jenna, Alexa, Sydnay, Cale, Sarah and Cameron.
Also her 10 great-grandchildren: Brinley, Dane, Alex, Cassie, Carly, Ben, Jovi, Cavin, Nolan and Caiden.
She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Sheda of Denver, Colo., and Marian (Jean) Howell of Iowa City; and her brother, John (Mary Ellen) Wall of Iowa City; along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 2002; her parents; and her brother, Lawrence Wall; along with several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
In addition to Dr. Elizabeth Loeb and numerous other physicians, the family wants to thank Laurena's caregivers at Oaknoll and Mercy Hospital for their professional and compassionate assistance shown to her and her family.
