BURT DAY Grinnell Burt Day, 81, of Grinnell, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, at Mayflower Health Care Center. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at the United Church of Christ-Con-gregational in Grinnell, with the Rev. Cameron Barr, pastor of the church, officiating. Music will be provided by Dr. William Tinker, organist, and Milton Severe, vocalist. Casket-bearers will be Steve Day, John Aronson, Russ Crawford, Galyn Gohlmann, Doug Kintzinger, Stuart Kintzinger, Mike Mahaffey and Gary Reed. A flag presentation will be conducted by the Grinnell Veterans Ceremonial Unit. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brighton. Friends may call at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell beginning noon Monday and the family will be present at the funeral home from 3 to 6 p.m. on Monday. Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Mayflower Community or to St. Francis Manor and sent in care of Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Burt was born Nov. 28, 1933, in Brighton, Iowa, to Wilbur and Isabelle Kilgore Day. He was raised on the family farm and attended Pleasant Valley Country School. He graduated with the class of 1951 from Brighton High School and later received a B.A. degree in animal husbandry from Iowa State University in Ames. On Oct. 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Florine Mae Keifer in Des Moines, and to this marriage was born one son, Steven. From 1957 to 1960, he served with the U.S. Army in the Fifth Missile Battalion, First Artillery, in Germany. He returned to Iowa in 1961 and began his banking career with the banks in Clarion, Keokuk and Center Point. In 1977, he and his brother purchased Benton County Savings Bank in Norway, Iowa. He later opened Day Realty and Insurance Services. Florine passed away Nov. 29, 1983, and he was married to Nancy Thompson Aronson on Aug. 1, 1987, in Marion. The couple lived in Norway. She died Feb. 6, 2002. Burt was married to Jewel Kintzinger on April 29, 2005, in Grinnell. Burt and Jewel enjoyed their seasonal homes in Grinnell and North Redington Beach, Fla. He was active in many community and service organizations during his lifetime. In 1982, Gov. Robert Ray appointed him to the Iowa Higher Education Loan Authority board, which assists Iowa's private colleges and its students. Burt also served with the Central Committee of the Iowa Republican Party for five years. Survivors include his wife, Jewel Kintzinger Day of Grinnell; his son, Steven (Christine) Day of San Francisco; his stepchildren and stepgrandchildren; his sister, Isabelle Holland of Des Moines; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives, Florine and Nancy; and four brothers, David, William, Richard and John Day.
