Reid, Dr. Richard Wood
Dr. Richard Wood Reid, DDS, 84, of Tipton, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 11 a.m. at First United Church of Christ, Tipton, with Pastor David Lorenzen officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Maquoketa.
Richard Wood Reid, son of Lloyd and Florence Wood Reid, was born Sept. 13, 1928, in Maquoketa, Iowa. He attended schools in Maquoketa, Delmar and Lost Nation and graduated from Farmington High School. Richard attended the University of Iowa, playing JV basketball for “Popsy Harrison.” Following graduation he taught high school and coached in Preston, Iowa and then was drafted into the Army. He served two years in medical units during the Korean War.
Following his discharge, he returned to the University of Iowa, taking classes in the School of Physical Therapy and transferred after one year to the College of Dentistry. He received the Minger Award for being the outstanding freshman student in dentistry and in 1958, he graduated with honors.
On Sept. 5, 1954, Richard was united in marriage to Beverly Guyer in Maquoketa. They became the proud parents of Theresa, David and Amy.
Dr. Reid opened his dental practice in Tipton in 1958 and always enjoyed his dentistry. He served on the building committee for the United Church of Christ, initiated the Little League Baseball program in Tipton, served on Tipton City Council, was a longtime volunteer with the high school girls' softball program and a timer of track meets. In 1995, he received the Friend of Education Award from the Tipton Education Association. Following his retirement in 1994, he and Bev enjoyed attending Elderhostels and spent their winters in Arizona. He was a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, United Church of Christ and Rotary.
“Doc” Reid was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Tipton Tigers and Chicago Cubs. He enjoyed playing bridge, travel and jigsaw puzzles.
Dr. Reid is survived by his wife, Beverly Reid of Tipton; daughters, Theresa (Patrick Cavanagh) Zumbahlen of Minooka, Ill., and Amy (Doug) Sheppard of Readlyn, Iowa; son, David (Michele) Reid of Solon, Iowa; six grandchildren, Jenny Crumly, Kurt and Kai Zumbahlen, Dan and Abby Sheppard and Carson Reid; sister, Diane Peterson of Plainfield, Ill.; and brother, Kenneth (Joanne) Reid of Davenport.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be made to the Dr. Reid Memorial Fund.
