Dohrer, Thomas E.
Thomas E. Dohrer, 56, of Iowa City, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following an extended illness. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. Ken Kuntz officiating. Burial will follow at St. Vincent's Cemetery, rural Riverside. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.
Tom was born in Iowa City on Sept. 23, 1952, the son of George and Camilla (Schnoebelen) Dohrer. He was a 1970 graduate of Iowa City High School and attended Kirkwood Community College. After school, Tom went on to proudly serve in the United States Navy.
On June 13, 1981, Tom married Julia Scoggins in Fort Branch, Ind. After returning to Iowa, he served as a corrections officer for The Iowa Department of Corrections at Oakdale for over 23 years.
Tom was a very busy man with many hobbies and interests. He loved to restore motorcycles and classic cars. He also was an avid reader, movie collector and genealogist. Tom also belonged to St. Mary's Catholic Church, Loyal Order of Moose, Moose Riders Club and the Harley Owners Group and was a past member of the VFW and American Legion.
Tom is survived by his wife, Julia; their son, Aaron James, of Iowa City; a brother, Mike of Tulare, Calif.; two sisters, Pat Mitchell, and her son, Luke, of Mesa, Ariz., and Peg Dohrer Naylor, and her sons, Dylan and Jackson, of Jefferson, Iowa; and many other nieces and nephews on Julia's side.
