Scurr, Julia Ann
Julia Ann Scurr, 55, of Coralville, died in her home on Monday, Dec. 17, 2012. Her family will greet friends Saturday from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at New Horizons Methodist Church, 2251 First Ave., in Coralville. A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m., with Pastor Carol Sundberg officiating. Private burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, Burlington. Lensing Funeral Service in Iowa City is handling arrangements.
Instead of flowers, Julia requested that memorials be directed to the Iowa Department of the Blind.
Born Sept. 18, 1957, in Macomb, Ill., she was the daughter of Jerome and Bonnie (McClain) Patterson. She married David Scurr on Dec. 8, 1984.
Julie graduated from Linn-Mar High School in Marion, Iowa in 1975, received a Bachelor of Science in therapeutic recreation at Western Kentucky University and received two master's degrees from the University of Iowa.
She was devoted to helping others throughout her life and was an inspiration to anyone who met her. Julie received numerous awards for her service to the community, including the Governor's Award from the Iowa Commission for Persons with Disabilities and the Distinguished Services Award for her 2002 to 2007 service as a Commission for the Blind board member. She was also key in the establishment of a hospice program for the Iowa Department of Corrections at Oakdale.
Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Dave.
She is survived by her mother, Bonnie, and father, Jerome, of Hernando, Fla.; one brother, Paul Patterson (Janet) of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; two sisters, Catherine Patterson of Merriam, Kan., and Deanna Humphrey (Jeff) of Romeo, Mich.; her stepdaughters, Shannon Oetken (Matt) of Middletown and Samantha Cohen (Adam) of Memphis, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews; seven grandchildren; and two adopted Pugs.
