Cottrell, Kathryn E.

Kathryn E. Cottrell, 80, of Vinton, died Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Vinton following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton. Interment will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Vinton. Friends may register one hour before the memorial service on Friday.

Memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.

Kathryn E. Abernathey was born April 25, 1932, to Ross and Rea Whiting Abernathey at Vinton. She was united in marriage to Marion Cottrell on Sept. 10, 1966, at Independence. Marion preceded her in death on May 10, 2010.

Kathryn is survived by her daughters, Conneye Dulin of Cedar Rapids, and Veanus (Jim) Hiler of Phoenix, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Deanna Abernathey of Brandon; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; her brother, Richard Abernathey of Vinton; and three sisters, Jean Thompson of Marion, Elsie Wilhelm of Vinton and Karen Scheppler of Norwalk.

In addition to her parents and husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by her son, Gene Abernathey; two great-grandsons; her brother, Donald; and three sisters, Nadine Quinby and Kay Ann Russum and Darlene Hodges.
