Glennis Marie Thurmond, 66, of Cedar Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, April 2, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids, conducted by the Rev. William C. Perkins. Burial: Linwood Mausoleum, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include her husband, Prentiss Thurmond of Cedar Rapids; mother, Canetana Hodges of Cedar Rapids; four children, Elizabeth Crooks of Tacoma, Wash., Jessica Oliver of Seattle, Wash., and Milton Thurmond and Quentin (Jessica) Thurmond, both of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; siblings, Mary Jo Gordon and Bettina Miller, both of Cedar Rapids, and Leland Cox of St. Louis; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, James Cox; brother, Daniel Hodges; and nephew, Gabriel Lee Hodges.
Glennis was born Oct. 31, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, daughter of James and Canetana (Cortez) Cox. She attended George Washington High School in Cedar Rapids. In 1971, Glennis worked for Rockwell Collins, retiring after 42 years. She also worked at Murdoch Funeral Home as a hostess.
Glennis was a member of Bethel A.M.E., where she played the organ. On June 7, 1972, Glennis married Prentiss Thurmond. She enjoyed fishing, playing bingo, and going to the casino.
Glennis had a special gift of hospitality and her house was always open to everyone.
