Harold "Skip" Bernet, 81, went to be with his Lord suddenly at his home in Anamosa, on March 5, 2017.

He was born July 1, 1935, to Margaret Bernet (Tuttle) and Ernest Bernet in Wilton, Iowa. In 1964, Skip launched Bernet Construction as a concrete and land developer. The success he enjoyed could be measured by the dedication and hard work put into his craft every day. After his retirement of 50 years in the business, he continued to show up most days to be involved in the day to day activities. Skip was no stranger to hard work and the drive it took to succeed.

During his young life, he and his daughters could be found traveling miles thoughout the Midwest showing quarter horses. He owned and showed many accomplished horses. The pride of his many showings was his horses winning the Quarter Horse Congress in Columbus, Ohio.

While Skip had many accomplishments, his true pride laid in his greatest achievement as a father to his three daughters, whom he gave an unconditional love without end. A prince of a dad, a friend and a loving grandfather.

Skip will be remembered as a "one in a million" kind of guy with an easy charm, practical wisdom and old fashioned values. It was a common sight to see Skip throw up his hand in a wave and smile at everyone as he drove his truck through town, whether he knew you or not. He was often heard saying "you can't finish if you don't get started" and that's what he did. He started an adventurous life and lived fully until he was finished.

He is survived by his daughters, Julie Majerus (Steve Nagel) of Monticello, Jodi Irish (Scott) of Marion and Connie Simcox (Dave) of Shellsburg; and grandchildren, Paige Jacobs, Brooke Majerus, Matt and David Simcox and Steen Irish and three great-grandchildren. Also, his special friend, Fran Appleby.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Glenn Bernet.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 10, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 9, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories Stateroom. Burial will be following the funeral service in Lisbon.

A memorial fund has been established in Skip's honor.
