Spargur, Jack P.
Jack P. Spargur, 78, of Monticello, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2012, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids after an extended illness. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 21, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the funeral home in Monticello. The Rev. Al Polito will officiate and burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Monticello.
Jack was born July 9, 1934, in Conrad, Mont., the son of Charles and Hazel (Sturges) Spargur. He graduated from Belle Plaine (Kan.) High School with the class of 1953 where one of his proudest moments was playing on the champion football team who went undefeated for four years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1953 and served as an airplane mechanic until his discharge in 1957. Upon returning to the United States, he married Patricia Barton on Nov. 25, 1959, in Belle Plaine, Kan. He began his career with Boeing in 1960 in Wichita, Kan., as an aeronautical mechanic on B-52 Bombers and 747's. He continued his career in 1970, earning a position with POLO Plastics in Monticello as the plant manager. He was responsible for the incredible growth of the company until his retirement in 1998. He also oversaw operations in other locations of MC Industries in Nebraska and Kansas.
In his retirement, he and Pat enjoyed participating in craft shows, making many different wood items and restoring furniture.
Surviving are his wife, Pat; two daughters, Tracy (Max) Miller of Wellman and Lorie (Gary) Moen Matthes of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Amanda Miller of Iowa City, Rachel Miller of Wellman, Aaron Moen and David Matthes, both of Cedar Rapids, and Belinda (Andy) Pillard of Marion; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Jonathan Pillard; a brother, Eldon of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters, Lillian (Bob) Ray of Colorado Springs, Colo., Phyllis (Curtis) Crawford of Belleville, Kan., and Carol (Ronnie) Cushman of Derby, Kan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and twin daughters, Sharon and Susan.
