Harlan R. Ross, 68, of Fort Dodge, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge. A service honoring Harlan's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge with the Rev. Ron Kitterman officiating. Military honors will be presented by V.F.W. Post No. 1856 and the Iowa Army National Guard. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the discretion of the family.
Harlan is survived by his wife, Doris; his daughters, Karla K. (Cmdr. Wilbert Bryan) Breeden of Naples, Italy, and Kylah R. (Rick) Mount of Phoenix, Ariz.; three grandchildren, AutumnRae K. Breeden, Bryanna L. Breeden and Camden M. Breeden; three brothers, Gary (Elaine) Ross, Steve (Sandy) Ross and Rick (Sandra) Ross, all of Manchester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Randy.
Harlan Ray Ross, the son of William and Mary (Timmerman) Ross, was born May 25, 1947, in Manchester, Iowa. He graduated from Manchester High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, serving for one year in Berlin, Germany, where he played football for the Berlin Bears. On July 12, 1968, Harlan was united in marriage to Doris Light. Harlan graduated from the Dunwoody Baking Institute in Minneapolis and worked for Pie Specialty Restaurants in Minneapolis, Des Moines, Chicago, Kansas City and Dallas. He was the production manager for Poppin Fresh Pies in Chicago. Harlan and Doris operated their own bakery for many years in their home town and then he worked in Kansas City before they moved to Fort Dodge. In Fort Dodge, Harlan was food coordinator at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility before retiring.
Harlan was a former member of the Manchester Lions and a member of Pythias Fraternal Organization. He loved to hunt all sorts of wild game and enjoyed fishing, golf and football. Harlan was active in his church at Manchester and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Fort Dodge.
