Video: Highlights from the Prime Time League (Basabe, cough, Basabe)
Jun. 15, 2010 8:39 pm
First impressions
Well, you've got to remember this is the Prime Time League in North Liberty, not the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. But it's hard not to be a little bit excited about incoming freshman Melsahn Basabe.
Basabe, who arrived in Iowa nine days ago, completely dominated everyone who tried to guard him. He scored 36 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a losing effort. He clearly was the power player on the court and impressed everyone who saw it. Incoming senior Jarryd Cole, who's not playing because of off-season knee surgery, remarked at one point that every time Basabe touches the ball, he scores.
Basabe hit 15 of 20 shots and at one point in the first half he scored on four straight possessions. He opened the game with a thunderous one-handed dunk and even had three assists. He's a raw talent and needs work when putting the ball on the floor, but for the first time playing in Iowa, he made a great first impression.
Devyn Marble also had a strong night, scoring 25 points, He admitted afterward he's a little sore from starting the intense weightlifting regimen. He struggled at times guarding incoming junior Matt Gatens, especially on the perimeter off screens. Gatens scored 26 and had six 3-pointers. He finished with a triple-double -- 11 assists and 10 rebounds. Eric May scored 27 opposite Basabe, although the two didn't necessarily guard one another.
Ex-Iowa City High and incoming Tyler (Texas) Junior College player Malcolm Moore scored 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Incoming Iowa walk-on Andre Murphy had one solid steal and an impressive layup. He scored eight points and had 10 rebounds.
