AMES - Tim Dwight's enjoyed his three frenetic weekends at the 2011 Iowa Games so much he's decided to extend his stay.
Dwight, who competed in 25 events to commemorate the Games' 25th anniversary, planned to finish Saturday but will play more flag football about 9 a.m. today.
“We've got some unfinished business to take care of,” said the former Iowa City High, Iowa and NFL star. “We've got to win our way back. We lost a tight one (Saturday), but it was fun.”
Dwight's flag football team, the Iowa City Flyers, includes other former City High standouts such as Merrill Coleman, Tony Burrier and Todd Barnes.
Dwight played quarterback as well as wide receiver.
He also competed in sand volleyball, dodgeball and soccer to cap his 25-for-25 experience.
Dwight endured just one ouch moment Saturday.
"I took one in the face in soccer," he said. "How about that? I was charging this guy, then he had a hit, I hit it back to him and he put it back up in my face. So that was about the toughest hit I took all day. ... Man, you learn how much out of shape you are when you're playing that game, because you're constantly on the move."
Whether it be soccer, horseshoes, air rifle, dodgeball ...
“Getting exposed to some of these newer things was definitely a cool learning experience,” Dwight said. “One reason I did this was wanting to see if I could do all these events. Two, to celebrate the 25th anniversary and, three, to learn some new skills.”
