Clyde Dell Bean Jr., of Cedar Rapids, passed away Friday, May 20, 2016, in the Hospice Unit at St. Luke's Hospital. He was born May 25, 1929, at home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Clyde D. and Blanche (Spencer) Bean. He attended schools in Cedar Rapids, graduating from McKinley High School in June 1947. It was at McKinley where he started his wrestling career when it was first introduced as a high school sport in 1946. After working one year, he attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, where he wrestled for Dave McCuskey and placed third in the 1950 NCAA tournament. After graduating in 1952, he began his teaching/coaching career in West Union, Iowa, until moving to Iowa City in 1956.
There he continued to teach and coach at City High School until his retirement in 1991. From 1968 to 1980 he was also head football coach at City High School. During his coaching career City High had 17 state champions, 57 placewinners and 64 state qualifiers in wrestling. In 1993, Clyde was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Clyde married his high school sweetheart, Leatrice Hansohn, in 1951 in Cedar Rapids.
He is survived by his wife; his children, Geri Kimmons of Cedar Hill, Mo., Tedi (Tom) Wilson of Solon, Cindra (Mike Alkive) Harr of Carefree, Ariz., Scott of Bettendorf and Julia (Bob) Olson of Agency; daughter-in-law, Adalla Bean of Iowa City; 17 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark; son-in-law, Larry Kimmons; brother, Ted; and sisters, Wilma Cabalka, Thelma Sampica and Lois Iben.
Clyde's family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at St. Mark's Faith and Life Center, 8300 C Ave., Marion. Services celebrating his life will follow the visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Clyde's name may be directed to the charity of the donor's choice.
