JACOB RICHARD CHAPLIN
Cedar Rapids
Jacob Richard Chaplin died unexpectedly on Jan. 20, 2019, at the age of 42 in his home.
Jake is survived by his parents, Miles Michael and Janice Marie Olson Chaplin; his longtime partner and mother of his son, Katherine Bollinger; longtime friend and mother of his daughter, Jo Wolff; his children, Naomi and Jacob Chaplin; his brothers, Michael McFarland (Jamie) and Benjamin Chaplin; his sister, Melanie Rampaul; much family; and his closest friend in the world, Nick Burgess.
Jake was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 16, 1976, to Miles and Janice Olson Chaplin. He grew up on the west side of Cedar Rapids, attending Roosevelt Middle School and Thomas Jefferson High School. Jake had a wild streak a mile wide and never married. He had two significant relationships that helped him to bring the most important parts of his life into the world, his children. Naomi and Jacob were the shining lights in his world and the most important part of his life.
Jake had an infectious smile and a laugh that was contagious. He was often the center of debauchery with the boys and broke a few hearts in his life too. He loved deeply and when he wounded, although not intended, he was always man enough to apologize. If we had to pick a motto to live by with Jake, perhaps it would be this: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, depth charge in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'What a ride!'"
A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 27 from 2 to 6 p.m. at Nick's Bar and Grill. No formal services will be performed and it is encouraged for friends to bring their memories to share at this time.
Donations and condolences may be offered at this time or following the celebration. His mother, Janice, will collect the memorial contributions to be used for the benefit of his children.
He will be deeply missed by his friends, family and all who knew him.
