Joseph Sanford Mun Jung Chang

JOSEPH SANFORD MUN JUNG CHANG Cedar Rapids Joseph Sanford Mun Jung Chang died of COVID-19 on Dec. 2, 2020, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, in the loving presence of family members. Born Sept. 1, 1935, in Palolo Valley, Hawai'i, he lived, worked and loved with sincerity and courage there and in California, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Virginia, Washington, and lastly Iowa. He was cremated, and a private memorial was held. A graduate of St. Patrick Elementary School, St. Louis Chaminade College, St. Mary's College of California, and the University of Wisconsin, he taught students of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee about literature and film as expressions of human creativity and experience, preferring the address Mr. Chang to Doctor or Professor. As a parent, Dad taught and modeled humane values, the love of many arts, and the joy of gathering over a home-cooked meal. Joe rode for the Hampshire Cycle Club, enthusiastically cheered the Green Bay Packers, and never missed a Metropolitan Opera broadcast. He gave as a food program volunteer, a blood donor, and a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church. He was rightly proud of his Chinese and Kanaka heritage and respectful of others' identities. Joseph SMJ Chang was preceded in death by his parents, Chang Kwai and Lum Ah Sam; his three siblings, Thomas (Vivian), Anita (William), and Francis (Jennifer); and his second wife, Suzanne Carter. He is survived by three siblings, Veronica (Toshio), Henry (Amy), and Barbara (Jonathan); his children, Aileen (Ron), Sarah (Jerry), Joseph (Glyciel), David (Tracey), and John (Myong); grandchildren, Kalani, Elizabeth, Leo, Eli, Chloe, Gabriel, Nathaniel, Aidan, and Nina; many nieces and nephews; and his first wife, Anne Craig. We deeply mourn his passing. We honor his 85 years with even greater pride, gratitude and love.
