CEDAR RAPIDS - With the basketball season coming up on Christmas break, Xavier's head coach Tom Lilly continues his passion for the game.
The Saints are 4-3 heading into Friday's game at Jefferson, but have shown they can be a force offensively, beating two of their foes by more than 30 points.
The Saints season actually started in the summer, and Lilly has seen an improvement.
'They did offseason summer workout, weight room participation and league games,” he said.
This year's team has seven seniors, led by point guard Kiana Stanek, who averages 8.5 points a game. Lilly's goal is for the seniors to lead on and off the court.
'Generally the team will reflect that leadership,” he said. 'The leadership should reflect what is important to them as a team.”
Junior Amelia Ivester has played varsity since her freshman year.
'She brings her height and a presence on defense,” Lilly said. 'Her perimeter shooting has improved each year out.”
Ivester averages 8.8 points a game.
'I think that I have grown so that now I can guard girls that are taller and bigger than me,” she said. 'I also have been able to help on defense.”
As Lilly begins his 32nd year coaching with four state championships under his belt, he finds the love of the sport through his athletes. He enjoys the interaction with his players.
'He wants us to be the best and be competitive,” Ivester said. 'He pushes us to play our best and always challenges us.”
Lilly encourages his players embrace faith and understanding of the game.
'When they finally move on from playing, they will be able to carry on a conversation about basketball,” Lilly said. 'Since I can barely walk, I live vicariously through the players.”
