CEDAR RAPIDS - Sunday (5/20) is your last chance to see 'Edward Hopper: Selections from the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York” and a companion exhibition, 'Hopper's World: New York, Cape Cod and Beyond,” at the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art.
The 13 pieces on loan from the Whitney Museum are part of a reciprocal exhibition, in which the Cedar Rapids museum sent 27 works by Grant Wood for the Whitney's landmark exhibition, 'Grant Wood: American Gothic and Other Fables,” on view there through June 10. Other Iowa contributions came from Coe College and the Iowa Masonic Library & Museum in Cedar Rapids, the Figge Art Museum in Davenport and the Dubuque Museum of Art.
'It has been an intense and productive two-year period of working with this prestigious institution to help craft their vision for this exhibition,” said Sean Ulmer, executive director of the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art. 'We are excited to share Grant Wood's accomplishments with a wider audience. We are equally excited to (have) a stellar and focused exhibition of work by Edward Hopper, all drawn from the Whitney's deep collection of work by the artist.
'Hopper, like Wood, was one of the premiere American artists of the 20th century, and this exhibition allows us to not only share his work with a Midwestern audience, but also to analyze currents in early 20th century American art,” Ulmer said.
Hopper 'is basically the Grant Wood of the Whitney,” CRMA associate curator Kate Kunau said in an earlier Hoopla interview. The New York museum holds the world's largest collection of Hopper works, while the Cedar Rapids museum holds the world's largest collection of Grant Wood pieces.
A companion exhibition, 'Hopper's World,” is drawn from the museum's 'own rich collection and looks at how other artists approached the subjects that Hopper returned to frequently throughout his career,” Ulmer said. 'This exhibition includes key works by Grant Wood and Marvin Cone and allows for thought-provoking comparisons. It is a terrific moment to experience the CRMA.”
To see these exhibitions, the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art is open from noon to 8 p.m. today (5/17), noon to 4 p.m. Friday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $3 to $7 and free for museum members and ages 5 and under. For information, go to Crma.org or call (319) 366-7503.
