Winker, Daryl A.
Daryl A. Winker, of Marion, formerly of Carroll, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2012. Funeral mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion with the Rev. David O'Connor officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Entombment will take place at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home.
Daryl is survived by his wife, Inez; his children, James (Ruth) Winker of Marion, Steven (Cynthia) Winker of Nashville, Tenn. and Gail (Roger) Simmering of Washington, Iowa; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Thomas) Fredrickson and their children, Marly and Carter, Amy Winker and her children, A.J. and Lily, John (Leslie) Winker, and Mark (Jordon) Winker and their son, Marshall; his sisters, Thelma Walz, Isabelle Hopfinger and Theresa Borden; sisters-in-law, Joann Hendershot and Jan Winker; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Robert, Don, Joe and Cletus; and his sisters, Lorraine Curran and Ruth Henney.
Daryl Arthur Winker was born on Feb. 29, 1924, in Carroll, the son of Arthur and Henrietta (Rust) Winker. He was a life long resident of Carroll where he attended St. Peter and Paul Catholic School and graduated from Carroll High School. Daryl later went to New York to work at the Bell Aircraft plant for two years. He was united in marriage to Inez Diers on May 11, 1948 at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia. Daryl owned and operated Winker Service and Auto Body Repair Shop for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll, Carroll Council Knights of Columbus and Carroll Elks Lodge. Daryl was an avid hunter and fisherman. For 20 years, Daryl held an annual fish fry for residents of the St. Anthony Nursing Home and led in the construction of the Swan Lake Fish House in Carroll. Daryl moved to Marion in December 2011 with Inez to be closer to family.
Daryl's greatest enjoyment was time with his family. He will be greatly missed.
