DOROTHY P. SMITH
Cedar Rapids
Dorothy P. Smith, 95, of Cedar Rapids, was called home on Friday, Dec. 15, 2017, surrounded by much love.
Dorothy was born Jan. 10, 1922, in the English Township of Iowa County, Iowa. She was the daughter of George Arthur and Cora Mae (Sanders) Herdliska. On Jan. 31, 1942, Dorothy married Erdis L. Smith, shortly before his enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Together they raised two children, Ty and Sheri, and made their home in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy earned a teaching certificate and also was employed by May's Drug, Collins Radio and Square D until her retirement. She spent the following years enjoying her children and grandchildren and the many pets they shared with her.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Jeff Jackson; grandchildren, Matthew and Lauren Jackson, Tawnya (John) Monnier and Kris (Tiffany) Smith; great-grandchildren, Jakob and Lauryn; her brother-in-law, James W. Primmer; and the surviving children of her many siblings.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Erdis; her son, Ty; her parents; and siblings.
Dorothy liked to spend her time gardening, visiting the local markets, canning and freezing produce. She was also a sports lover, especially of the Hawkeyes and NASCAR, which she loved to share with her son, Ty, and her grandson, Matthew.
Her most beloved interest was her children and grandchildren to whom she gave endless time, love and devotion. To those who loved her, her spirit will not only be a precious memory but also a guiding light.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories.
A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy's honor.
