DeLong, Dorothy M.
Dorothy M. DeLong, 89, a longtime Cedar Rapids resident who recently moved to Winslow House Care Facility, Marion, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, at St. Luke's Hospital following a sudden illness. Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday at Papich-Kuba Janeba Chapel West, 1604 J St. SW, by the Rev. Del Bear. Interment: Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral chapel.
Dorothy is survived by three daughters, Charlene Shurtz, Linda (Alvin) Salsbery and Karen Holiday, all of Cedar Rapids; seven grandchildren, Mike (Angie) Shurtz, Jennifer (Steve) Shurtz, Crystal Salsbery, Steven (Becky) Harford and Jill Holiday, all of Cedar Rapids, Wendy Gangevoort, and Jeff (Tawnya) Salsbery of Newhall; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale (Sue) O'Brine of Cedar Rapids; and sisters, Mary (Clifford) Kephart of Midway, and Ruth Briles of California.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Hattie (Chambers) O'Brine; husband, Bill; daughter, Ann; sister, Betty O'Brine; and brother, Melvin O'Brine.
Dorothy was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Cedar Rapids. She married William B. DeLong on August 17, 1951, in Iowa City. He died Sept. 23, 1985. Dorothy was employed for a time at National Oats, was a homemaker and cleaned homes for several years. When her husband was living, they enjoyed rock hunting. Dorothy also enjoyed shopping and reading.
She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Dorothy's family would like to thank everyone at the Mercy Wound Healing Center for the outstanding care and compassion they gave Dorothy during the two years she had been going there.
A memorial fund has been established in Dorothy's name.
