Dorothy Ellen Grenis, 93,
of Mount Vernon, formerly of Marion, passed away peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at Hallmark Care Center in Mount Vernon. In agreement with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, at the Summit Pointe Senior Living Community, located at 3505 English Glen Ave. in Marion. Inurnment will take place at Rogers Grove Cemetery in Ely at a later date.
Dorothy was born Aug. 15, 1925, in Marion, Iowa, the daughter of Hubert and Genevie (Scott) Hutton. She attended Irving Elementary School and graduated from Marion High School in 1944. During the war, Dorothy worked for Western Union in San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oregon and Chicago. She wrote to Theodore, a sailor serving in the Caribbean. Dorothy did not meet him until he returned home after the war. They were married and lived in Chicago Heights, Ill., until returning to Iowa.
Dorothy worked at the former Younkers in Lindale Mall and then at Farmers State Bank in Marion in the real estate department as a secretary, retiring after more than 20 years. She was active in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion and then St. Matthew Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Dorothy enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, tatting and embroidery. She always had flowers and loved doing yardwork. Most of all, Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her seven children, Tony (Judy) Grenis of Tellico Village, Tenn., Ted (Becky) Grenis of Ely, Iowa, Sharon (Larry) Henderson of Brooklyn Park, Minn., Connie (Tom) Glavin of Hinsdale, Ill., Karen (Roger) Smith of Hoschton, Ga., Tom Grenis of Virginia Beach, Va., and Tim (JoDee) Grenis of Broomfield, Colo.; 15 grandchildren, Elizabeth Grenis, Jessica (Scott) Ball, Brock (Myleena) Grenis, Brooke Grenis, Amy Henderson, Andy (Mandy) Henderson, Annie (Bart) Bartholomew, Maggie Glavin, Tim Glavin, Jamie Smith, Charlie Grenis, Willie Grenis, Kylee Grenis, Taylor Grenis and Quyncie Grenis; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Georgia Windenburg of Marion; and brother, Tom (Fran) Hutton of Davenport.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Theodore; granddaughter, Emily Grenis; and sister, Hazel Gent.
