Mike was born Oct. 14, 1949, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Richard and Lorraine Lippmann Schmid. He married Kathy Roe on Jan. 3, 1970, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Norway. Mike was a physician's assistant with the Army, retiring as a captain in 1994 after serving 23 years. Mike was a Desert Storm veteran and was awarded many medals during his service, including the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star. He was most proud of his Ranger tab. He then worked with Dr. David Field at Westside Orthopedics in Dubuque, retiring in 2010. Mike was a member of the MJ Kirby Post 170, Blairstown American Legion.
Mike loved to hunt, fish, read, golf, and spend time with his family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and made everyone around him laugh. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law, and proud soldier. He left a lasting impression on each person he met. Mike loved to learn and earned his master's and Ph.D. after his military retirement.
Instead of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Mike's name.
The family wants to thank the University of Iowa Bone Marrow Transplant and Leukemia Center doctors and nurses, the staff of the Bone Marrow Unit floor for their wonderful and personal care of Mike, and Hospice of Iowa City.
