The Alzheimer's Association is inviting Cedar Rapids residents to unite in a movement to reclaim the future for millions by participating in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's. Green Square Park will be the site of the Walk on Saturday, September 22nd starting with check-in at 9:00am and officially kicking off at 10:00am.
Walk to End Alzheimer's is more than a walk. It is an experience for nearly 1,000 participants in the Cedar Rapids area who will learn about Alzheimer's disease and how to get involved with this critical cause, from advocacy opportunities, the latest in Alzheimer's research and clinical trial enrollment to support programs and services. Each walker will also join in a meaningful ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is a growing epidemic and is now the nation's sixth-leading cause of death. As baby boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer's disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today's estimated 5.4 million Americans living with Alzheimer's. In addition to the new and improved 3.2 mile walk through downtown, participants will enjoy performances by Twisters Gymnastics and the Xavier cheerleading squad, a children's area complete with a bounce house, and a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer's. Walkers are invited to stick around for a post-walk celebration featuring live music and free walking tacos. Start or join a team today at alz.org/walk or by calling 1-800-272-3900.
“There has never been a greater need for local citizens to join in the fight against Alzheimer's disease by participating in Walk to End Alzheimer's,” said Paige Knebel, Coordinator of Community Events and Outreach for the Alzheimer's Association East Central Iowa Chapter. “Funds raised will provide care and support services to the 69,000 residents of Iowa living with Alzheimer's, while also contributing to advancing critically-needed research.”
The 2012 Statewide Presenting Sponsor is Care Initiatives. Hope Sponsors include Rockwell Collins and Good Samaritan Society of Northeast Iowa. Mission Sponsors include Home Instead Senior Care, A.C.T., GreatAmerica Leasing Corporation Donor-Advised Fund of the Greater Cedar Rapids Foundation and Mercy Medical Center.
