BOSTON - Boston Red Sox outfielder Ryan Sweeney of Cedar Rapids broke a finger punching a clubhouse door during Monday night's game at Fenway Park against the Detroit Tigers and will miss eight weeks.
Sweeney had surgery Tuesday to repair the knuckle on his left pinky finger. He punched the door in frustration after a groundout in his final at-bat.
He went 0-for-4 in a game Boston won, 7-3.
"I just came down, walked down the stairs [in the dugout] and kind of punched the door a little bit, which I've done before but maybe not to this extent," Sweeney said after the game to MLB.com.
He is hitting .260 with no home runs and 16 RBIs this season. He apologized for the injury Tuesday in a Tweet,
"I Just want to apologize to my teammates, RedSox, and fans," the Tweet said. "I don't normally loose (sic) my cool and this was not an intentional action."
