Roger James Fischer, 89, of Clutier, passed away Friday, July 29, 2016, at his home in Clutier under the care of his family and Cedar Valley Hospice. A funeral liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 2, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Deacon Joe Behounek officiating. Interment will follow at National Cemetery, rural Vining. Visitation will be Monday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.
Roger was born Aug. 25, 1926, in Clutier, Iowa, the son of Alfred and Albina (Kostlan) Fischer. He graduated in 1944 from Clutier High School and attended the University of Iowa. On Aug. 25, 1951, he was united in marriage to Mary Theresa O'Brien at St. Matthew's Rectory in Cedar Rapids. Roger was a former officer at Clutier State Bank, retiring in 1989, after 42 years of service.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in Clutier until it closed and then St. Joseph Catholic Church in Chelsea. Roger was a former mayor of Clutier for over 20 years. After retirement, Roger and Mary Theresa spent their winters in Arizona. They enjoyed traveling and camping with family, visiting all 50 states. They loved to dance to big band music with a special group of friends.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Mary Theresa of Clutier; three children, Loren (Laura) Fischer of Dubuque, Lynne (Doug) Glandon of Sigourney and Laura (Paul) Ernst of St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren, Chris (Amy) Glandon and Jennifer (Jeff) Martin; and four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Katelyn Glandon and Chase and Alexis Martin.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents.
