From the Cedar Rapids Kernels
Former Cedar Rapids Kernel Garrett Richards has been promoted from the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League to the Los Angeles Angels and will be the starting pitcher when the Angels take on the New York Yankees at 6:05 pm tonight in Yankee Stadium.
Richards played for the Kernels in 2010, posting an 8-4 record, 3.41 ERA and two complete games in 19 starts. In 108.1 IP, he allowed 92 hits and 48 runs (41 earned) with 34 walks and 108 strikeouts. He was promoted to high-A Rancho Cucamonga on July 28, 2010 and was the Angels first round pick (42nd overall) in the 2009 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma.
With the Travelers this season, Richards has a 12-2 record, 3.06 ERA and three complete games in 21 starts. His promotion to the Angels is due in part to the suspension of Jered Weaver and he joins 13 other former Kernels on the LA Angels active roster.
