William John was born in Dunlap, Iowa, on May 9, 1933, the son of Lawrence and June Foust Robson. He earned a Purple Heart and various other medals while serving in the U.S. Navy as a medical corpsman during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. After serving in the military, he attended Creighton University, where he earned a bachelor of science in education in 1958. He went on to achieve his doctorate of medicine in 1965. While attending Creighton in Omaha, Dr. Robson met the love of his life, Mary Agnes (Aggie) Gutschenritter, and they were united in marriage on Aug. 9, 1958.
Dr. Robson began his career as a physician in 1966, succeeding in establishing a successful family practice for over 50 years. Dr. Robson remained a colleague of Mercy Johnson Avenue until he formally "retired." Dr. Robson was from the generation that never truly retires and he continued practicing family medicine at Mercy Care South, which is a benefactor of His Hands Free Clinic of Cedar Rapids. He "formally" retired at the age of 80 after continuing to give compassionate care, never-ending generosity and knowledge and his true desire to help those in need.
Dr. Robson's lifelong hobby was raising thoroughbred horses and attending the races. He was a licensed pilot, avid reader and a history buff. Dr. Robson was an active member of the Knights of Columbus. He was well known for his storytelling, both fact and fictional. Those who knew him well have been privileged to hear tales of his two pugs and his adoration of horses. He always greeted one and all with a smile; you were never overlooked by him, and his laugh was simply infectious. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and brother, and he will be greatly missed
Dr. Robson's family includes his wife of 57 years, Mary Agnes (Aggie); five children, John (Chris) Robson, Carrie (Dennis) Richard, Joe (Traci) Robson, all of Cedar Rapids, Carmen Dixon of Iowa City and JJ (Heather) Robson of Waverly; one sister, Rachel (David) Wear of Sahurita, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Dr. Robson was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and June Fouts Robson; his grandparents, John and Maude Fouts; and in-laws, Ed and Dorothy Gutschenritter.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to His Hands Free Medical Clinic or the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy.
