Sokol Cedar Rapids to rebuild downtown hall

Sokol Cedar Rapids will develop rehabilitation plans for its flood-damaged hall in downtown Cedar Rapids with the help of a grant.

The group was awarded $3,000 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Johanna Favrot Fund for Historic Preservation.

Sokol will use the grant to develop a building preservation plan.

The century-old building at 417 Third St. SE was inundated in the June 2008 flood.

Gymnastics classes and other events have been held in a new location at 5200 18th Ave. SW.

The Cedar Rapids Sokol unit, a Czech social and gymnastics organization, was started in 1873.
