Coleman, Harold Ray
Harold Ray Coleman, 85, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, Aug. 26, 2010, at Heritage Nursing and Rehab. Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 30, at Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Robert Dagit. Visitation: 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and also one hour before the service. Burial: Shiloh Cemetery, Hiawatha, with military honors by American Legion Post 727.
Survivors include his brother, Robert E. (Jan) Coleman, sisters, Arlene Baumgartner, Alice (Dean “Buddie”) Stegman, Doris (David) Leonard, all of Cedar Rapids, and Nancy (Cecil) Ellison of Solon; brother-in-law, Harold “Duke” McGowan of Cedar Rapids; and many loved nieces and nephews, with a special mention to nephew and farming buddy, Harold Ray (Jeanette) McCormick of Fairfax, and niece, Frieda (Duane) Coonrod of Cedar Rapids.
Harold was born Aug. 9, 1925, in rural Marion, Iowa, the son of Charles E. and Bertha (Odland) Coleman. He served in the U.S. Army Tank Battalion during the Korean War. After returning home he enjoyed farming with his brother-in-law, James R. McCormick, in Fairfax, later assisting James' son, Harold Ray, until retirement due to health problems. Harold dearly missed operating the farm equipment so then smiled as he maneuvered his John Deere riding lawn mower around his yard as long as his failing eyesight allowed.
His sly sense of humor and quick wit always livened up conversations with him. He will be missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roy Coleman; sisters, Adria McCormick and Helen McGowan; and brothers-in-law, James R. McCormick and Elwin “Al” Baumgartner.
