Velma Knake, 101, went to meet her Lord and maker Aug. 4, 2016. Visitation will be Aug. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Lahey Funeral Home, Wyoming, Iowa. Services will be 11 a.m. Aug. 17 at Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming. Pallbearers are Chris Burnett, Doug Fairbanks, Eric Sterling, Tyson Dinslage, Tom Murphy and Sam Endres. Honorary pallbearers are David Hansen and Steve Hansen.
She was born May 22, 1915, to George V. Dusanek Jr. and Millie A. Henak. She married Henry John Knake on Feb. 22, 1944.
She is survived by her two children, Carol (Merton) Burnett and John (Pat) Knake. Grandchildren are Christopher (Kyla) Burnett, Tricia Burnett, Jody (Doug) Fairbanks, Julie (Eric) Sterling, Patsy Gendreau and Pam (Tyson) Dinslage. Great-grandchildren are Jarrett and Kassandra Burnett, Pierce, Abby, Kaylee and Luke Fairbanks, Katelynn, Olivia, Sydney, Isabelle and Brock Sterling, Ayden and Michaela Gendreau, Quinn and Drake Dinslage; a sister, JoAnn Murphy of Milwaukee, Wis.; and beloved nieces and nephews.
She was very fortunate to have a wonderful roommate at the Anamosa Care Center, Diane Harms. Among her special friends in Onslow are Barb Harms, Betty Doden, Betty Wurst and Maria Dunkel.
Velma was a homemaker and loved all of her family dearly. She lived on her parents' farm southwest of Onslow until she and Henry retired and moved to Onslow. Her family and friends were what kept her going each day. She especially loved to play bingo and cards (Rummy, 500 and Pinochle). She belonged to Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, and a card club in Onslow.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister, Ann Hansen; brother-in-law, Ervin Hansen; brother-in-law, Ambrose Murphy; and grandson-in-law, Ryan Gendreau.
Memorials may be made to Zion American Lutheran Church or Wyoming Cemetery Association.
