Gringer, Harold F.
Harold F. Gringer, 99, of Riverside, passed away Friday, June 29, 2012, at Mercy Iowa City. Mass of the Resurrection will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside. Father Brownfield will officiate. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, rural Hills. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at St. Mary's Parish Center. Visitation for Harold will be held Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Harold Francis Gringer was born June 26, 1913, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Henry and Mary (Birrer) Gringer. On Feb. 18, 1939, Harold was united in marriage to Dorothy Reed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Niles, Mich. Harold was a First Class Carpenter Mate in the United States Navy C-Bees during World War II. Harold served 33 months in the South Pacific. He lived and farmed on the Martin Birrer farm for 20 years. After he left the farm, he worked in construction in Moline and Davenport. In 1949, Harold moved to Ventura, Calif., where he worked for the Government Department of Defense as a carpenter foreman and was later promoted to supervisor of maintenance for 12 years and then transferred to the Department of Interior National Park Service until his retirement in 1975.
Harold was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Riverside and a lifetime member of Riverside VFW Post 6414.
Harold will be deeply missed by his sister, Rose Leta Rittenmeyer of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy in 1997; sister and brother-in-law, Laverna Rummelhart and husband Roy; brother-in-law, Bernard Rittenmeyer; nephew, Kenneth Rummelhart; and niece, Theresa Swafford.
A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home in memory of Harold.
