Fran Mehlert, 91, of Grinnell, died on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2020, at Windsor Manor in Grinnell and under the care of UnityPoint Health-Grinnell Regional Hospice.
A private family service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Interment will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be designated to UnityPoint Health-Grinnell Regional Hospice and mailed in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112. Memories and condolences may be shared online with Fran's family at www.smithfh.com.
Fran was born on Dec. 21, 1928, in Brooklyn, Iowa, the daughter of Ellsworth and Ava Harlan Monroe. Her family moved to Grinnell in 1934, where she attended Grinnell High School, and graduated with the Class of 1947.
Fran was united in marriage to Donald Mehlert on May 22, 1955, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church. The couple was blessed with one son, Greg. They made their home in Grinnell and she was employed at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. as a supervisor in the data processing department. She retired in 1997 after 50 dedicated years with Grinnell Mutual. She was an active member of the Grinnell Regional Auxiliary following her retirement.
Fran was a selfless individual who held a strong love for her family. Granny Snickers cherished time spent with her grandkids and following in their activities. Her enjoyments included bowling, computers, cooking, socializing and dining with co-workers and friends. She enjoyed traveling, including trips spent at Cloud Nine Ranch in southern Missouri and always treasured visiting family in Florida.
Fran is survived by her son, Greg (Sue) Mehlert of Milton, Wis.; two grandchildren, Jeff and Kim Mehlert of Milton, Wis.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald, in 2015; and her siblings, Albert Monroe, Katherine Findlay, Gerald Monroe, Irene Greer, Ellsworth Monroe Jr., Velma Monroe and George Monroe.
