Louis John Schoettmer, 74, of Mount Vernon, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at the Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. with a funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Community Bible Church, 940 W. Mount Vernon Rd., Mount Vernon, by Pastor Dave Dechape. Burial: St. Joseph Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, at a later date. Arrangements are with Stewart Baxter Funeral & Memorial Services, Mount Vernon.
Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann; children, Jeffrey (Tammy) Schoettmer, Angela (Mike) Gardeman, Shelly (Mike) Massell, Kelly (Todd) Anderson, Renee (Dale) Eslinger, Michael (Cara) Schoettmer and Daniel (Susie) Schoettmer; Jo Ann's children, Cindy Shuttleworth, Patty (Keith) Glodowski, Arnold (Bev) Lutheran, Wade Lutheran, Tammy (Jeff) Schoettmer and Lynn Gunderson; sister, Joanne (Jean) Oliphant; brother, Gerald (Mary) Schoettmer; 25 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
John was born Jan. 8, 1942, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Louis and Catherine (Stark) Schoettmer. He was a farmer and had also worked at John Deere in Waterloo and Lynch Ford in Mount Vernon. On June 17, 1996, he married Jo Ann Lutheran in Lisbon.
A member of the Oakland Pontiac Club, John had a great appreciation for Pontiacs and collected several of them. He also enjoyed NASCAR and taking pictures of special times with the family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
