John R. Holmes, 81, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, June 20, 2014, at the Hia-watha Care Center following a long illness with Parkinson's disease. Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Teahen Funeral Home by Pastor John Elliott.
John is survived by his wife, Martha; two children, Brian (Kathy) and Connie (Jeff) Palmer, and two grandchildren, Cody and Sara Palmer, all of Cedar Rapids; one brother, Ralph (Grace) Holmes of Belle Plaine; and one sister-in-law, Bernadine Hoyt of Cedar Rapids.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Arton and Gladys Holmes; and sisters, Thetis Churchill, Noma Karr, Jeanette McDonald, Verna Holmes and Laurel Roskop.
John R. was born April 22, 1933, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Arton and Gladys Beebe Holmes. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1951. He married Martha Rammelsberg on July 28, 1956, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids.
John was a journeyman with Plaster and Cement Masons No. 160 for many years and worked for Pearson's Wall Systems, St. Luke's Hospital and several other local contractors.
John was a member of VFW Post 788 and Moose Lodge 515. He loved camping, hunting, fishing, boating and woodworking.
The family would like to thank the Hiawatha Care Center and Milestones Adult Day Health Center for their kind and compassionate care of John over many years.
Memorials may be directed to the family who will then direct them to research for Parkinson's disease.
