EUGENE "GENE" JOHNSON

Eugene "Gene" Johnson,
86, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017,
at UnityPoint-St. Luke's Hospital. Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, at St. Patrick Catholic Church by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Inurnment: 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Cemetery. Masonic services will be at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may visit with the family from 4 to 7 p.m. A short visitation also will precede the church service Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Gene is survived by his children, Steve (Sue) Johnson, Jan (Terry) Knudson and Doug (Teri) Johnson, all of Des Moines, and Teri (Dave) Conrad of Arlington Heights, Ill.; sister, Sandy (Gary) Lurvey; brother, Larry (Rita) Johnson; seven grandchildren, Shawn, Derek, Matt, Kristi, Curtis, Robert and Marianna; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Dianne, of nearly 50 years; and his sister, Joan Kutzner.
Eugene Merle Johnson was born Dec. 19, 1930, to Lloyd and Margaret Reitenbaugh Johnson in Marshalltown. Following high school, he worked for many years at FMC and Norand. On Oct. 9, 1965, he married Margaret Dianne Drew in Cedar Rapids.
Gene had many interests and talents, especially woodworking and golf. Later in life, he obtained his pilot's license. He was deeply committed to his wife and his extended family.
Gene will be remembered for his devotion, quick wit, calm demeanor and generous spirit.
Gene was an active member in his community, a member of Mount Hermon Masonic Lodge 263 amd Cedar Rapids Scottish Rite and a former member of the El Kahir Shrine. He was a 50-year member of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church or Mount Hermon Masonic Lodge 263.
