Richard Folkmann, 86, of Newhall, passed away Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at St. John Lutheran Church, Newhall, with the Rev. Steven W. Rempfer officiating. Interment will be at St. John Cemetery near Newhall. Visitation will be at Phillips Funeral Home, 212 E. Sixth St., Vinton, from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, 2014.
Richard Frederick Folkmann was born Sept. 26, 1928, in rural South Amana, Iowa, the son of Christian and Sophie (Baack) Folkmann. He was baptized Oct. 21, 1928, and confirmed April 18, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. He served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 and was a member of John Ward McGranahan American Legion Post 167.
Richard was united in marriage to Gladys Marie Rammelsberg on Dec. 8, 1954, at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. Together they lived and farmed near Newhall until he retired in 2012. In 1979, Richard and his son, Dean, were named Iowa Master Pork Producers.
Richard is survived by his wife, Gladys; and two children, Dean (Julie) Folkmann of Newhall and Diane Folkmann of Cedar Rapids; grand-daughter, Katelyn Folkmann of Newhall; two brothers, Raymond and Merlin (Laverna) Folkmann of Williamsburg; sister, Loretta Schlesselman of Williamsburg; sister-in-law, Verla Rammelsberg of Studio City, Calif.; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Clarence; and two sisters, Florence Schaefer and Edna Schmidt.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Vinton Lutheran Home or Central Lutheran School in Newhall.
The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Vinton Lutheran Home and Hospice Compassus for their excellent care of Richard and support of the family.
