Larry Wayne Umstead, 73, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy, Hiawatha. Per Larry's request, there will be no services. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 21, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cedar Rapids.
Survivors include his wife, Jean of Cedar Rapids; children, Joey (Rex) Netolicky of Swisher, Jessica (Mike) Steffens of Swisher, Jason (Carley) Umstead and Josh (Jessica) Umstead, all of Walford; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Bonnie (Don) Miller of Fort Dodge.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
Larry was born on Aug. 19, 1942, in Eagle Grove, Iowa, the son of Robert Devere and Rose Christina (Rasmussen) Umstead. Larry was a graduate of Eagle Grove High School and a 1964, graduate of Buena Vista College, Storm Lake. Larry was united in marriage to Jean Marie Brauman on Sept. 16, 1964, in Eagle Grove. Four children were born to this union. Larry then attended Iowa State University, graduating in 1967. He was employed with Wilson Foods and Farmstead Foods until their closing in 1990. He then was employed with Kirkwood College until his retirement in 2006.
Larry was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
