Corrigan, MIchael J.
Michael J. Corrigan, 87, of Lake City, Minn., passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, at St. Elizabeth's Nursing Home in Wabasha.
Michael was born June 1, 1925, in La Crosse, Wis, to James and Rose (McCormick) Corrigan. He grew up in Harpers Ferry, Iowa, and graduated from high school there. He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and Loyola College in Chicago. Mike received his Master's Degree in Education from Winona State. He married LaVerle Welsh on Aug. 19, 1952 in Elkander, Iowa. They lived in New Albin Iowa, for a short time and then moved to Lake City. He taught in several schools in Iowa before they moved to Lake City where he started as an elementary teacher. Michael later became the elementary principal for Jefferson and Bluff View Schools in Lake City. Mike retired in 1986. He also bartended at the Terrace, Harbor House and Pioneer Supper Club for many years. Mike continued substitute teaching for many years after his retirement. Laverle passed away Nov. 28, 1997. He was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church, MEA, NEA and Elks Club in Red Wing, board of the American Red Cross from 1977 to 1995, Lake City Planning Commission from 1994 to 1997 and Lincoln High School Band Boosters. Mike enjoyed playing the piano and most of all visiting his family.
Michael is survived by two sons, Kevin (Judy) of Corpus Christi, Texas and Bruce (Debra) of Park City, Utah; adopted son, David Schmidt; four grandchildren, Niccole, Jack, Bennett and Wilson; and six brothers, Gerald of Dubuque, Cyril (Jean) of Decorah, Bob (Peg) of Cedar Rapids, Rich (Elaine) of Cedar Rapids, John (Lois) of Cedar Rapids, and Pat of Decorah.
He was preceded in death by his wife, LaVerle; a son, Paul; and four brothers, Charles, Mark, Wayne and Jim.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 23, at St Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church in Lake City, Minn., with Father Joseph Pete officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Mahn Family Funeral Home Anderson-Peterson Chapel Lake City. Friends may also call one hour before the service at the church.
