Today, June 6 was the 19th Annual Pigman Sprint Triathlon held in Palo, IA. It consisted of a 500 yard swim, 15.5 mile bike, and 3.1 mile run. (Results can be found here.)
The conditions were terrific for a triathlon. The water was about 75 degrees and many with wetsuits said it was too warm. I did not use a wet suit. Air temperature was in the 60's but it was a little windy.
The fortunate thing about the wind was it was from the west.
This made the wind hit the athletes from the side on the bike. We really did not go head on into the wind, which was fortunate.
It was sunny and I got heated up a bit on the run, because I wore black.
The Pigman is always managed well by John Snitko and crew. There were over 900 participants either doing the race individually or in a team. Registration was held on Saturday at the Marriott. I walked in and right up to the registration table. There are many things on sale to help with your triathlon supplies.
Today at the race, I went right up to the table and got my timing chip and they marked my body with a permanent marker with my number. It started on time and was a lot of fun for all participants.
Dennis Green did the announcing and always throws in some fun comments. He said, as I finished,
Frank just turned 50 and wants to prove he is still in shape.
The best part of any triathlon is the refreshments and banter of the participants after the race. They had all sorts of fruit and snacks to munch on. I had a good time just going up to my friends from the Milky Way Masters swim team and comparing notes on the race. This was my third time doing Pigman by myself. Previously I was on a team and did the swim portion. I guess I am trying to prove I am still young.
