Gene A. Hora, 85, of Tiffin, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Mercy Iowa City.
Gene was born Oct. 2, 1929, in Clutier, Iowa, the son of George and Lillian (Mareda) Hora. He graduated from Clutier Public School in 1947 and worked at Hartwig Motors in Clutier until joining the Marine Corps in 1950 during the Korean War, serving as a radio operator. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and went back to work for the Hartwig family. When Hartwig's purchased Eden Motors in Iowa City in 1961, Gene moved to Tiffin and went to work there until his retirement 42 years later, on June 30, 2003, as a service manager.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada and trap shooting in numerous places. On weekends, he spent time at a cabin on the Cedar River, near La Porte City that a group of guys put up after demolishing an old house for wood.
Gene was a member of the Clutier American Legion, Post 453, VFW and numerous trap shooting clubs.
He is survived by his sister, Donna Hora of Clutier; and his cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A gathering for family and friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 13, at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. Casual attire is encouraged. Burial of Gene's cremated remains will take place 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 24, at the Oneida Cemetery with military honors provided by Post 453. A reception will follow the burial at the legion hall.
