Jose D. Ruiz, 86, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, at Mercy Medical Center following an extended illness.

Surviving is his wife, Gayla; two stepdaughters, Brenda and Gwendolyn Kirkwood; eight grandchildren, Amber Simmons, Jasmine (Kenny) Tjaden, Olyvia, Lauren, Devin and Naudia Dixon, Lindsey (Scott) Baumgarten and Joseph Kirkwood; and numerous great-grandchildren.
Jose Demetrio Ruiz was born July 29, 1934, in Texas. He worked in several packing plants and eventually worked at the Iowa Mens Reformatory in Anamosa as a guard. He retired from the reformatory in 1996. Jose was a coach for both amateur and professional boxing in Cedar Rapids.
