Gene A. Cherry, 77, a resident of Iowa City, formerly of Amana and Davenport, died Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.
Graveside services for Gene will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, at Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. If you'd like to join the family, please be at Halligan- McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, 614 N. Main St., downtown Davenport, at 10 a.m. to join the procession to the arsenal. Keeping with his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Safe Haven of Iowa County, P.O. Box 444, Williamsburg, IA 52361.
Gene was born June 17, 1939, in Springfield, Mo., the only child of Paul Edgar and Edna Lois (McMahan) Cherry. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in 1962 with an art degree and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He proudly served our country in the Air Force.
Gene was united in marriage to Judith Peterson on Jan. 15, 1971, in Denver, Colo.
He retired as a contract specialist for the Department of the Army based on Arsenal Island in 1997.
Gene always was willing to give you advice, even if you didn't ask! He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and reading.
He is survived by his wife, Judy, Iowa City; children and their spouses: Janet (Chris Gilbert) Cherry, Rogers, Ark., Greg (Melissa) Cherry, Fayetteville, Ark., Paul (Becky) Cherry, Coralville, and Lisa Cherry, Des Moines; and grandchildren, Ian (Becca), Elizabeth, Maggie, Mackenzie, Alexis, Georgie, Brett, Kyle and Lucy.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents.
