Albert Charles "Chuck" Haman, 87, of Cedar Rapids, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, March 25, 2017, at home.
He was born in 1929 in Emmetsburg, the son of Ray and Marie (Ducommun) Haman. He married Peggy Higgins on Nov. 7, 1954. Chuck completed ROTC at the University of Iowa in 1951. During the Korean conflict,
he served as 1st lieutenant infantry platoon leader, U.S. Army 1st Calvary Division. Chuck was an associate professor of biology for 28 years at the University of Northern Iowa.
He received the Outstanding Service Award from the Iowa Academy of Science and UNI Biology Department award for Teaching, Researching and Service. His published book on the history of Rush Lake can be found at the Laurens Public Library.
Survivors include his wife; a sister, LaDonna (Haman) Adolf of Kentucky; five children, Beverly Freeman of Cedar Rapids, Chuck Haman of Holland, Chris Haman of Cedar Rapids, Ken Haman of Pella and Jeanna White of Temple, Texas; 13 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren, and one due in June; sisters-in-law, Betty Sterling of Cedar Rapids and Karel Bishop of Estherville; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 10 a.m. May 27 at Harris Funeral Home, Mallard, followed by a graveside service with military honors conducted at Curlew Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Mercy, Cedar Rapids.
