Carl Joseph Merfeld, 86, of Monticello, died Monday, July 25, 2016, at Jones Regional Medical Center, Anamosa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, at Kramer Funeral Home in Monticello with a Knights of Columbus rosary recited at 4 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, prior to funeral services. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday July 30, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello with burial in the church cemetery where military honors will be accorded. The Rev. Paul Baldwin will officiate.
Carl was born Jan. 17, 1930, in Cascade, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Mary Anna (Koob) Merfeld. He married Margaret Irene "Peg" Lewis on Oct. 1, 1955. Carl served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, following his graduation from St. Mary's High School. He retired after 32 years working for the city of Monticello. He loved fishing, hunting, bowling and playing cards. Carl was everyone's favorite uncle, always teasing someone.
Survivors include his children, Dave Merfeld, Dan (Lynn) Merfeld, Amy (friend Dave Johnson) Bartels, Brad (friend Tanda Foster) Merfeld and Gregg Merfeld, all of Monticello; 17 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and siblings, Rose Marie Oswald of Monticello, Joseph (Dode) Merfeld of Cascade, Louis (Gladys) Merfeld of Dubuque, Ann (Gerald) Gudenkauf of Ryan, Theresa Drew of Cascade and Allan (Bev) Merfeld of Rockford, Ill.; in-laws, Cheryl Merfeld of Rockford, Gerry Merfeld of Benton Harbor, Mich., Jo Ann Egger, Kenny Lewis, Madonna (Steve) Koob, Maynard Lewis, Terry (Linda) Lewis, all of Monticello, and Chuck Pierce of Cascade.
He was preceded in death by his parents; parents-in-law, Don and Evelyn Lewis; his wife, Peg; son, Wade Merfeld; son-in-law, Roger Bartels; daughter-in-law, Peg Merfeld; great grandchild, Justis Curry; siblings, Francis and Robert Merfeld and Mary Margaret (Larry) Ahlers; and in-laws, Earl Oswald, Ralph Drew, Mary (Carl) Gudenkauf, Geri Pierce and Ron Egger.
